Cayuga Community College Telecomm Department

Problem:

The look of the department did not reflect the cutting edge equipment and programs that Cayuga Community College offers. There was also no way for students and visitors to identify where the department started or ended!

Solution:

Taking a tour through the Telcom classrooms and lab spaces, it was clear our colors were grey and black. We painted the hallway walls two tones of gray, a darker tone on the bottom wall, lighter on top to create dimension. Between the two paint colors, we installed a vinyl graphic border of sound waves in electric blue on a black background. That set the design tone and carried the theme down the hall. As an identity for the walls, we used 4-color vinyl graphics, the film strip photos are actual students working with the equipment, very personal and realistic images. In the center, playing on the history of technology, we featured dated TVs, projectors and radios that incorporated the logos from the various programs the department offered. The ceiling tiles were switched out for more black and grey, and tract lights replaced the nasty fluorescent box lighting. All the wood trim and doors were painted high-glass black. The effect is dramatic, contemporary and fun!

I worked very closely on this project with Brian Redfield of Image Agent. He created the graphics, printed it on vinyl and installed it. His creativity and talent brought this project to “eleven.” Next stop Nursing Dept.!!
