Problem:
Good Shepherds Brewing Co. owner Garrett Shepherd knows how to brew deliciously strong beer- period. As far as what to do with tasting room decor- not so much. I’ve worked with Garrett and his family in two different locations now, and as it turns out, I will work for beer/cider ;-).
Solution:
Luckily, Garrett & his family are very handi-capable. Painting, building, electric- we got this! The color palette we chose complimented the logo & quite honestly drinking! So rich bright blues keep the space organic yet modern. We used navy blue on the ceiling so it would disappear, and the bright blue behind the bar as an accent, then grey elsewhere. All the trim is silver metallic, to match the lighting and steel building elements. We re-used the beer bubble pendants from his first space and added drum lights, tracks, and star globe fixtures for a retro modern look.
Stored down in the basement were several leaded glass windows, original to the
building. Immediately I knew they would perfect for the back bar wall, so patrons could look through to see the brewing process, with class! The tin ceiling sadly had to come down for fire code, so we salvaged it to front the bar with, and used more floor to ceiling in the bathroom. We toned-down the tin’s existing cream color with light washes of blue & silver to make it blend and pop the 3-D effect. For the flooring, we installed grey-washed tile that looks like wood plank.
Next, I called in my go-to designer-fabricator extraordinaire Keith Traub to create the huge raw edge common table, the bar, booth seating, round high tops & other pub tables, and the corner drink ledges in the front window nook. Keith also helped brainstorm and design the gallery wall hardware. In that the wall was solid as a rock, we needed a system that was self-supported, versatile and sleek. His steel strips did just the trick, and can be inter-connected to make different lengths giving artists more flexibility when hanging First Friday shows.
For the final interior touch we called on A&M graphics to install a vinyl logo above the booths, the shield design actually ties into the leaded windows, bringing it all together nicely. For the exterior, I was awarded a NYSCA grant to do a community mural install. Enter talented artist Kendall Doub from NC. We worked together with Garrett and settled on the Hops Splash design, and over the course of a long weekend, completed the work with the help of various volunteers. It’s been a pleasure to work (twice) with such a nice family & friends. See ya’ll on the path!
